If you'd like to know how to make this then read on! (The entire thing is totally free by the way)
First, you need a yahoo account. You can use an existing one or make a new one here.
login.yahoo.com/config/login?.src=fpctx&.done=http://www.yahoo.com
Once you have your account and you've logged in, click on My Mail and it will call up a page that says "Welcome, (your name)" next to the welcome message, you will see a gray square with an persons outline, click on it to start customizing your avatar. You will need to choose if your avatar is a girl or boy. This CANNOT be changed later.
Now, you may begin customizing your avatar. Using the gray Tabs at the top, you can navigate the customizing options. When you see something that you want your avatar to wear, click it, if you want to take it off, click it again. Click on Appearance to change your avatars skin, hair and eye color as well as face type and hairstyle. Remember to use the Next button for more options and try experimenting with the color tabs that you sometimes see to the right of an image of something for your avatar.
Once you've got the face you want, move on to Apparel to get dressed. You might want to consider Saving your avatar at this point so that you do not loose your work. (On the left in the Previewing Changes below your avatar is the Save button) To dress your avatar you can either use Full Outfits which is the fastest way to set it up or Individual pieces separated into two categories Tops and Bottoms. There is also a plus sizes line of clothing. If you want to speed up the process of searching for something, type in what your looking for in the Search Avatar Items box and click Search.
Now that your avatar is dressed you might want to save it, again. And then perhaps add some Extras which include Accessories | Fantasy & History | Sports & Hobbies | Pets | Holiday & Events | Issues & Causes | Flags | Family & Home as well as categories beneath those options.
Then there's the Background which starts as plain white, there are lots to choose from so using that search box is highly advised.
Branded offers a small variety of things that are from special promotions. Including Star Wars! Check those out for fun, I usually don't use anything from there myself.
If you're wonder what all that Add to My Favorites stuff was above the things you saw for your avatar let me explain. The last Tab is for My Favorites and it's special items that you can 'tag' to find easier later. You have a limited amount of space though so only tag necessities. I recomend that you especially add your favorite hairstyles to your favorites because they are harder to find later. You can also Save a completed avatar to your favorites (under the save button) so that you don't have to reassemble it again later.
Now that you've made your avatar, it's time to show it off. First, Save your avatar once you like the way it looks. Click on the gray Home tab and look at the right of the page and you'll see "Yahoo! Avatars" as orange text in a blue box. Click on Export. There's no need to use the Download option, if you're familiar with right click and "save picture as" to upload the avatar yourself you can do that from here but theres a much better way to show off your avatar.
Start by choosing the size of your avatar. Large is full body and small is head only.
Next, choose the Format. I always use JPG.
Then choose how to Generate your avatar. If you want the link for your avatar choose URL and you'll get something like this
[http://lookup.avatars.yahoo.com/ewimages?enc=sVUmsQ1FScGjV1xmkkI4Ah2yUEJFJLYzgP0-&size=large&type=jpg
In a forum like this, you could put
[*img] before the URL (link) and [*/img] after the URL like below
[*img]http://lookup.avatars.yahoo.com/ewimages?enc=sVUmsQ1FScGjV1xmkkI4Ah2yUEJFJLYzgP0-&size=large&type=jpg[*/img]
Take out the *'s and your avatar should appear in a post.
If you want your avatar on your page at howrse, use HTML as your generate option. This is the way I insert HTML codes into my profile: I go to my Profile and choose the location of the item I am inserting. I type something like Paste Avatar Here then I click HTML mode (on the right just above smilies) and I look for whatever I typed, I then select it and paste my HTML code right into the spot. Then I don't have to worry about messing any other HTML codes in my profile up. Remember to ONLY select the text that you typed
Now the really cool thing is that if you decide to change your avatars outfit and you have it on your howrse page you won't have to export your avatar and copy the HTML code again, the avatar automatically changes to whatever you change it too!
I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial, feel free to PM me any questions.
