Sydney: "That's the beauty of the internet nowadays when it comes to tracking down horses. But that won't help us determine the father. Unless...! That's it!" I said, my face lighting up with excitement. "The stallion's breeding report! We might get lucky enough to be able to find a breeding record for the mare to a stallion, do the math, and see if this foal is the result of that breeding!" Then my face dropped again, "Unless the mare didn't take when they were bred and she ended up breeding to a different stallion than the one they thought she was bred too. But most breeding barns keep records on file of things like the day the mare was bred, the day of a vet exam to make sure she's pregnant... That's it! The vet exam! Think about it, the mare's barely been wild for a whole year. It takes , so they say, exactly 11 months, 11 days & 11 hours before the foal is born. Withing the first few months the vet would have performed an exam to determine whether or not the mare was pregnant. Now let's say the mare was freed, what happens to her records? I think they'd stay on file, which means________" I stopped there to let someone else fill in the rest. The fact that the mares records could very well be in Berryhills office. And we had a mole on our side! OOC: Fact is, even if Milton (or whoever) did free the mare, there would always be record of vet bills which would probably contain the name of the mare.

Miley:
"oh my gosh! your right Syd. but we still have to figure out her name. so Trill that is up to you. since the mare and foal have both taken a liking to you. wait, hold on a sec. i know how we can figure out if the mare was wild or once in a barn." i said and whistled lightly to Rampage. the bay stallion came to me like in a fairy tale. i untied the crimson lead rope from Rampage and handed it to Syd. "hold him please." i said and touched the rim of my hat. "haw!" i said to Rampage and the stallion took off and jumped over the fence. i rode him into the barn and then stopped him by the tack room. i jumped down and then ran inside. i grabbed a bridle, saddle, and a blanket. then i jumped back on Rampage and galloped him out of the barn and back to the corral. i opened the gate from Rampage's back then rode him at a trot to Syd and Trill. "we can see how she does with a bridle and saddle and a rider on her back." i exclaimed. i heard a whinny and looked at Focus Flair. he jumped around and pranced to Rampage. Rampage nickered and touched noses with Flair. "hmm......."

Trillium: "that would be a good idea, but..." but, the drawling manager of Black Bluffs stables claimed to have put all records of Confection through the shredder. no matter how cool it would be to come across a forgotten documnet bearing her name ang lineage, anything like that would have compromised Caramel Sensation's potential showing career. But, wait.... "Who can drive?" i asked suddenly, coming up with an idea that just might work. "after the clinic gets over, i have an acute suspiscion that a trip up to Carson would be a bonne idee." then, i snapped my fingers. "but, until then, anyone with free time should probably check last year's show records, the Black Bluffs website, and-" i tugged my iphone from my pocket- "The official Berryhill Stables web records. Milton's paranoid, and has me keep lots of the files on a secret phish-proof website." i was at the marroon-tinited page in no time flat. "I'll check last year's records very fast..." i began to scroll away on the little screen. it was like a treasure hunt...

Sydney: Everything was moving so fast! Miley & Rampage brought out a saddle and bridle to test the mare, Trill was surfing for Berryhill records and talking about paying Carson a little visit when another thought hit me. "You said Caramel Sensation was a show mare. She's probably registered and so are her parents. We know what breed Sensation is, so we know what registry her mom would be in. And we also have the physical information on our Mystery Mare here. So all we have to do is find out how many foals, we'll go ahead and break it down to fillies only and compare colors, markings and that sort of thing. A registry wouldn't destroy it's records. Even if the horse was missing! I know quite a few friends in different registries, I can use that to get the missing information but I need to know more about Caramel Sensation's mother's registered name and breed. I'd be more than happy to accompany you Trill, I can drive and after the clinic I'll be able to take some free time away from the barn. What do you say we get to the bottom of this?" I asked, a smile broad across my face. We could do this!

Miley:
"i have my laptop in the stable, so i can look up Black Buff stable and see what Caramel's mother's name was." i said. "Caden and Alex know a lot of other show stables in the area that might have seen Caramel at a competition too!" i exclaimed. hearing their names Caden and Alex looked over at us. finally stopped staring at each other. i shook my head and rolled my eyes. "Love Birds." i mumbled. Alex had ground tied the red sorrel mare with her and Caden had ground tied Heart Song as well. they walked over to us. Alex asked what was going on. "we are trying to firgure out where this beautiful mare came from and where her gorgeous foal's sire is." i said quickly. "can you guys think of any stables or shows that you might have seen a mare like this one?" i asked them quickly.
Alex:
i studied the fudge chestnut mare and her coffee bay filly. i scratched the back of my neck then snapped my fingers. "Hope Lock Farm, used to have a mare like this one at one of the shows. Gail, owner of Hope Lock, had gotten a the mare from Black Buff Stables. but the mare had a sister that looked just like her. but there was only one difference between the mares. this mare had two white spots. one under her mane and the other on the inside of her back leg." i said and walked towards the mare. i lifted up the mane and there was the first spot. then i walked back towards her back leg and lifted up her tail. then looked inbetween her legs and saw the second spot. "Hope Lock Farm is an Apploosa stable. it only has appaloosas and this mare is the one that Gail had. she told me that the mare was getting trained for anything because she was going to be becoming a lesson horse." i said and patted the mare on the neck. "and her name is................. um.................... Scarlet O' Paradise." i said to the girls. i looked at the mare and her ears were pericked up and listening to me say the name. she knew that it was her name. "i do think i remember the dam's name too. it was Pretty Copper Penny and the sire's name was Golden Cascade." i said and the mare neighed. "i have seen both of the parents at Black Buffs. but i saw all the stallions and not one of them look anything like this foal." i said studying the bay filly.

Sydney: "Well, that answers a few questions about the mare but still leaves us blank on the filly. But since we now know her registered name, that will make finding breeding records easier. Do you know which association she's registered with Alex?"
OOC: What breed is Scarlet O' Paradise? Appy?

Alex:
"well Hope Lock Farm is an Appy only farm. and i think Gail said that she was half Appy and half Quarter Horse." i said and watched the filly. "and the foal is a mystery. why dont you check her for any spots. if her mom was HALF Appy and she was bred to a pure Quarter Horse. than the foal will be all Quarter Horse." i said.

Sydney: "I don't know about that one. What I do know is we better hope she's registered as an Appy or that we find some sort of paperwork on her. I have several friends in different associations, I could make a few calls but I'll need as much info as possible before I do that. Anyone else know anything or have any ideas?" I asked, so far, the clinic had gone from a clinic, to a horse name brainstorm and now we were trying to track down the father to a foal that had recently been brought in form the wild.

Miley:
"nope."
Caden:
i shook my head 'no.'
Alex:
"that is all i know of about the mare. but im sure that i could run over to check with Gail, if she has anything on Scarlet." i said.

Sydney: "That sounds like a great idea. Right now though, why don't we continue on with the clinic? Has everyone evaluated their horses?" I asked mentally checking off those that I had come by...

Owen: i butted into the conversation. "Dev and I still haven't been checked over, but i believe it's fine- he doesn't have any issues, except being pretty green." Dev was now snoozing, one hoof propped on its tip, ears laid horizontally out like helicopter blades. i was excited to find out about the mystery mare and her foal. Trillium: no matter how i sliced it mentally, something about Hot Chocolate, or Confection, or Scarlet O'Paradise, just wasn't making sense. almost all of the facts that Miley and alex had sleuthed up meshed perfectly. but something didn't quite fit.... I finished checking the Berryhill breeding records. Milton, of course, kept good notes. but, alas, only a few non thoroughbred mares were listed anywhere on the website. "we have records for two two quarter horses, four arabians, a hanoverian, and a welsh cob, but they all seem to be accounted for." i surfed through the provided pictures, and only one even came close to MM's coloring. her heavy, muscular conformation was so different from MM- that was for Mystery Mare's- slight build that they couldn't be the same. "i guess we'll just have to check extraneous resources, then." and then, it hit me like a ton of bricks. conformation- that was it! "i'm afraid that Paradise of Hope Lock stables is a no-go," i said. "while it's definately possible for appaloosas not be be spotted- i once knew of a pedigreed appy named topaz who was bright bay, without a single dot- and that appaloosas come in all ranges of body types, the half-quarter horse deal just doesn't fit MM." i demonstrated her slightly dished forehead, highflung tail, and slender limbs. "she lacks any of the characteristic quarter horse features- short, powerful neck, long head, gigantic leg muscles, and powerful barrel. she's just not half quarter horse. also," i tried to remember where my train of thought had rolled to, "Paradise's parents names, Golden Cascade and Pretty Copper Penny, have very little to do with Caramel Sensation. Since she was supposedly such a well-bred showhorse, you'd think that a systematic sort of name would accompany her." things were getting more and more complex all the time. OOC: i had to go and take another look at the lovely picture- definately arabianesque, dontcha think?

OOC: i actually got the picture on a Tennessee Walker Horse Website i think. or maybe it was an Egyptian Arabian Website. Miley:
"ok? now it is very confusing?" i said to Trill.

OOC: VERY. And it was an Arab site, check the link: www.karijaarabians.ca/images/mares/maysa2.jpg Her name must be Maysa, pretty! Hey, Maysa the Mystery Mare! Sydney: "Dev certainly has a very laid back personality" I said with a chuckle. Trill finished checking Berryhills online records but came up empty. Then another thought occurred to me, "Did anyone check to see if the mare had a chip or tattoo? Most well bred show horses have one. It could have been planted at a very young age..." I said drifting off. We'd never used chips in our racing horses, or even the few that I had ridden in Eventing but it was a possibility for the mare. OOC: Remember in Phantom Stallion #17 Mountain Mare? That's how they found Lass' owners!

OOC: I remember Topaz, the spotless-Appaloosa! She was a bit (a LOT) on the crazy side, but very pretty. And Maysa is a great name! Did you have any previous ideas, Spot? MAry Anne: "We could always check for a chip-- can't hurt to try! Do you have a scanner, Katie?" I asked. The mare certainly had delicate conformation. I wondered if she was part Arabian, or something even more exotic, like a Paso Fino or a Spanish Barb?
