Mike: I positioned Taz just in front of the first starting gate, facing the track. "All set?" I asked, looking around to see if the others were in their place as I tightened the reigns.

Owen: "Yes!" Ballenina shifted from foot to foot, calm as usual in the face of the competition. hardly anything phased my horse.
Milton: "I certainly hope so." my stallion was arching his neck against the reins and pawing at the fine loam of the track. he wanted to run, and i couldn't wait to go. "On your marks...."

Mike: I leaned low over Taz's muscular neck. Any second now my face would be pounded with a rush of speed and air. That moment was take off, that moment is what I live for.

Milton: "Get set.... GO!" without even a tap of the heels, my horse was off as if he had wings on his feet. i tried to keep him close to the outside of the track, since i didn't know how he would relate to high-strung racers in a tense situation, but he was still running like the wind, as fast as he could go. Faster than Smoke off a Louisiana Swamp, I thought with satisfaction. it was from some redneck song or another.

Justin:
Quest stood ready to run and when the sound 'Go!' was said the stallion blasted off. he was trailing behind Mr. Berryhill's stallion. i gave a slightly firm tug on the reins ever so often to remind Quest not to take off, just yet. as he gained more speed i lowered myself towards his neck. i loosened the reins ever so slightly and Quest took off a little more and was now neck and neck with Mr. Berryhill's stallion. i looked over at Mr. Berryhill and smiled to him. i lifted my hand up to my Stetson, touched the rim, and Quest moved of faster than any other horse. soon he was several horse lengths ahead of the other horses. i patted his neck and leaned lower on his neck. he went off faster and soon he was at least or more than 5 horse lengths away from everyone else. i looked over at Lace the filly was prancing around and nickering to her dad. i smiled and whistled to her. she perked her ears and then galloped off after us. she wasnt as fast as the other horses but she loved to run like her father. she took after her father a lot.

Mike: When Milton gave the start, I instantly kept Taz in. "Easy there boy, it won't do to use all of that energy just yet." Taz looked back to me with a glare and pulled against the bit, still, I held him in. We stayed on the rail, well off the pace but this was how Taz ran best. If only Taz knew that... We flew up the track, if the wind wasn't whipping through my ears I was sure the sound of hooves was like thunder over the mountains. Still holding Taz in, I eased up ever so slightly on the reign, giving Taz a bit more head. He eased forward, along the rail till we were in the middle of the pack as we came to the first turn.

Justin:
i looked over my shoulder. Taz was in the middle of the pack now and Quest and i were still in the lead. the appaloosa had stamina most other appies didnt. i loved the stallion with all my heart. i turned forward again and eased Quest back a little. he was starting to get too far ahead. i wanted to keep some distance between us and the other horses. since Quest was an appy and the others were Thoroughbred's except Mr. Berryhill's stallion. he needed to keep some distance from them. i rounded the first turn staying close to the rail and still infront.

Milton: We were losing gorund, thanks to our position on the outer rail. Slowly, I edged my horse inside, though i kept him at the tails of Taz and Quest and Bellerina. While I wasn't in it to win it, I did not want to finish last. The first turn came upon us, and my horse took it in stride.
Owen: I momentarily kept Ballerina back, making sure that Milton's stallion was okay going full bore ahead. When everything seemed to be going fine, I leaned further up on her neck, letting the wind whip my hair- i would have to get it cut soon- and whispered "C'mon, girl!" Ballerina lengthened her stride, transitioning from a slightly bouncy though rythmic gallop to a graceful, smooth sprint. On the first turn, we were only half a length from the leaders.

Justin:
i looked back once again. Ballerina was nearing us and it was now the final stretch. i urged Quest up with my legs and slightly loosened the reins again. he moved off again this time to cover the ground that Ballerina had caught up to us. then as we were half way to the finish post i let loose on the reins and Quest galloped off at a full sprint. soon we had lost the others almost completely. we crossed the finish line and i slowed Quest. he snorted and pranced around. i looked down the stretch and the other horses were finishing. and then i saw in the middle of the pack Lace. the little filly had caught up to the other horses. Quest nickered to her and the filly cut through the pack and trotted over to Quest. Quest ruffled her forelock. he nickered to her again. and he seemed like he was congratulating her for running with the other horses. the chestnut appaloosa was growing up fast for her age.

OOC: Did we miss the final turn? We went from around the first turn to the final stretch...No backstretch...no final turn... Mike: The leaders, Taz , Quest and Ballerina stayed close as we came off the first turn. Milton's Mustang had lost ground from running on the outside and had fallen just behind us. I kept Taz at a steady pace as we roared over the backstretch. OOC: Hotspot, if there's a problem with me 'backing' the race up please let me know and I'll modify this post. -Mia

OOC: yeah, we actually missed two turns! let's replay that a bit slower, shall we? here's my version, since we shan't do any more powerplaying.
Owen: We approached the second turn three abreast. dark crimson, oak, and mahognay necks surged as one as we completed the first half of the track. we were beyond the third turn in an instant, still all within fractions of lengths from one another. Justin let Quest have his head, and they began to pull away bit by bit. I knew that it probably wouldn't be prudent to do the same to Ballerina, since, when jumping, i always needed full contact with her mouth. Still, I loosened the reins and gave a light touch of the heels to increase speed. her stride lenghtened and her head lowered as we bridged the gap between us and Quest in the first half of the backstretch.

Mike: I kept Taz in check, he wanted to blast after them but I knew now wasn't the time. Quest was approaching the final turn and Ballerina was right on his heals. Taz and I were about 5 lengths back, just where I wanted to be. We started around the turn... OOC: Thanks Spot

Milton: My mind was chirning something that i had just thought had struck a note... "smoke... flames..." I glanced the my left, to where the sprinklers had left standing puddles on the verdant midway. our reflection breezed by in parts. like smoke passing over glass.... "smoke... and mirrors!" that was it! The name that I had been looking for. "I officially dub you Smoke and Mirrors!" i whispered into one black-tipped ear. it swiveled to take in my voice. Yes! in a sudden burst of speed, we began to make up lost ground.

Mike: It was as if someone had lit a fuse on Milton's mustang. He took off, thundering down the track after the others. "There's our cue, boy." I whispered to Taz. "Let it rip!" I crouched low on Taz's neck and extended the reins as far as they would go. Taz flew with a new burst of speed and the distance between us and the leaders began closing rapidly fast.

Owen: Now we were really flying! Almost everybody was even, with Milton slightly behind and Justin still slightly ahead.
Milton: Everybody began to pick up even more speed as we approached the post. who would win??
